Skyrim Enchanting Perks and Guide to Enchant Items

Skyrim Enchanting is the magical augmentation of existing devices and weapons to imbue them with magical effects. The more powerful the enchanter, the stronger the magic he can bind to his weapons and armor. Skyrim Enchanting falls under The Mage play-style.

If you want to enchant items, first an item with a pre-existing enchantment must be disenchanted, using an Arcane Enchanter. The item is permanently destroyed after doing so. Henceforth, the character can imbue items with that quality using filled Soul Gems. Soul Gems also restore the depleted enchantments of weapons, with the perk Soul Squeezer giving additional effect to this feature. The quality of soul gem used for weapons determines the amount of charge the weapon has to begin with, while on armor and jewelry it determines the magnitude of the enchantment.

Question
Skyrim Enchanting Questions?
In Skyrim, I know there are many factors to how strong an enchant is, but does the item that you are enchanting affect the strength of the enchant? like does a silver garnet ring enchant stronger than a plain silver ring? also what exactly is a soul gem? do you need to fill the soul gems that you pick up if you pick up a petty soul gem for example? and when you soul trap something do you need to have a soul gem in your bag already or does it just make one? thanks

Answer
No, the item you enchant has no effect on the power of the enchantment. That is effected only by which soul gem you use and your enchanting level.

A soul gem comes in 5 different sizes. They will state which size they are, followed by which size soul they contain. E.g. If you have a "common" soul gem, but have a "lesser" soul in it, it will be named as "Common Soul Gem (Lesser)" - Soul gems can only hold souls of a smaller to equal size. So a Lesser gem cannot hold a greater soul.

If the name of a soul gem has nothing in brackets, that means it is empty and requires a soul. To do this you need to hit an enemy with the soul trap spell/enchantment and kill it whilst the effect is still active. - You will not trap a soul without an empty soul gem to hold it.

Hope that all makes sense

Question
What point is there to Skyrim Enchanting?
So I started leveling up my enchantment skill, but then I discovered I couldn't disenchant my ArchMages Robes and Morokei mask. And those two things (archmages robes give -15% overall spell cost, +50 magicka, +150% magicka regen --- Morokai gives +100 magicka) are quite possibly the best gear for a mage, and simply require beating the mages guild to acquire them.

So if I can't disenchant them to put their stats on, say, some high quality armor, and I will probably never acquire an enchantment that is better than those things, then why in the hell would any mage even bother to raise enchanting? if not as a source of income?

by Richard

Answer
Well here is an example of why to bother raising enchanting:

Step 1: Enchanting Skill 100. (Plenty of guides on this and smithing to make armor)

Step 2: Pick an armor set. (Glass, whatever)

Step 3: Enchant 25% cost reduction in two spell lines (due to double enchant perk) on 4 pieces (Ring, Necklace, Chest, Helm)

Step 4: Throw away Archmage robes and Morokai mask. Enjoy zero spell cost or spread the reduction out between more schools if you like.
